"A child is an eager observer and is particularly attracted by the actions of the adults and wants to imitate them. In this regard an adult can have a kind of mission. He can be an inspiration for the child's actions, a kind of open book wherein a child can learn how to direct his own movements. But an adult, if he is to afford proper guidance, must always be calm and act slowly so that the child who is watching him can clearly see his actions in all their particulars."

MONTESSORI   PROGRAMS

Toddler Class - For Children Ages 18 months - 3 years:

  • The toddler class concentrates on preparing the very young child for the preschool program.

  • Activities are designed to develop concentration and establish large and small muscle control.  Children enjoy exercises that stimulate eye-hand coordination and small muscle development.

  • The focus at the toddler level is to further develop language, order, movement and independence.

  • Colors, shapes, and other academic topics are incorporated into the classroom activities, as each is ready for them.

  • The toddlers enjoy music: (songs, finger plays, and rhythm sticks.)

  • Art activities include:  collages, modeling clay, and finger painting.

  • Children are not required to be potty trained before entrance into the Toddler program.  The staff will assist your child with toilet learning as he/she shows signs of being ready.

  • Some toddlers adjust quickly to the Toddler environment with no apparent difficulty.  Other children will cry and cling to the parent.  Some will become unusually quiet and will not join activities, but will choose to peacefully observe instead.

  • Be assured that the staff members are understanding to your feelings and especially your child’s feelings.  They are equipped with a generous supply of unconditional love.

  • Low, airy, elevated cots are provided for afternoon naps.

  • When the toddler shows developmental readiness (determined by the toddler directress), he/she is gradually introduced to a preschool classroom regardless of child’s age or date within the school year.

  • Only in the toddler program are the children permitted to enroll for less than five days per week.

Preschool and Kindergarten - For Children Ages 3 - 6 years:

  • Children enrolled in the preschool must be potty trained, weaned from the bottle, attend five days per week, and no longer require afternoon naps and/or a pacifier.

  • Children in this group enjoy a hands-on curriculum.

  • Whenever a child shows readiness, he/she receives an individual lesson from a teacher.

  • Each child works at his or her own pace, free of stress or competition.

  • As the child’s concentration and physical coordination increase, he/she becomes ready for more advanced learning.

  • Areas of study include:  Practical Life (everyday living skills), Sensorial (utilization of the five senses), Language, Mathematics, Culture (Science and Geography), Music, Art, Physical Exercise, Spanish and French.

  • Montessori preschool education is unfinished without completion of the kindergarten year in a Montessori classroom.

  • Enrolled students receive school-sponsored screening by a Psycho-educational specialist at the onset of the Kindergarten year, and the Stanford Early School Achievement Test (SESAT) is administered  in the spring of the Kindergarten Year.
